The news has been full of stories about the H1N1 flu lately and there are certain dental care tips that could help prevent contracting this and other illnesses.
One way to avoid getting sick is to maintain a clean toothbrush, since this object enters the mouth every day. Buying a new toothbrush could also be a good idea.
Dr Jed Jacobson is a dentist in Tennessee who claims toothbrushes should be replaced every four months because they wear out and eventually clean less effectively. Jacobson also says that individuals who were sick should buy new toothbrushes as soon as they feel better to avoid getting sick again.
One tip some people might not know about involves the household microwave. Sterilizing toothbrushes once a week can kill the bacteria that accumulates on them, and this can be accomplished by microwaving brushes for about one minute while they are damp.
The American Dental Association says that toothbrushes should never be shared because this could result in the transmission of body fluids and microorganisms that might cause dangerous infections.
