A group of dentists in Glenview, Illinois, says that people can be allergic to many different substances and patients should tell their dental care providers about which materials may cause a negative reaction.
Dentists want to improve their patients' dental health, not damage it, so it's important for them to know if their clients are allergic to materials such as latex and certain metals, since such substances are often used by these professionals.
Many dentists used to wear latex gloves, but because a lot of people are allergic to this material, some dental care professionals now wear gloves made of other synthetics instead.
There are options for people who are allergic to metals too. If a patient reacts badly to nickel, he or she can ask for fillings made of porcelain, which can actually be better since their color makes them harder to spot.
The Mayo Clinic says allergies can affect the skin, sinuses, airways and stomach. Their severity can range from minor irritation to anaphylaxis, a life-threatening emergency in which blood pressure drops suddenly. Though allergies can't be cured, their symptoms can sometimes be treated.
