Retired service members in a town in Ohio were recently invited to receive free dental care in honor of Veterans Day.
Bob Muster is a dentist in Huber Heights who decided to offer veterans a chance to get their teeth checked out for free on November 10, according to a local CBS affiliate. Muster said he was surprised that many retired service members don't have dental coverage.
In addition to Muster, six dentists in his office decided to offer their services, according to the news source. Notification was sent out to 36 Veterans of Foreign Wars posts in order to attract former military men and women to the event.
Muster told CBS that he and his colleagues performed fillings, root canals and tooth extractions.
The Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) will only provide outpatient dental treatment to retired service members who have a VA service-connected compensable dental disability or condition. Various other restrictions also apply.
Many dentists have been volunteering their services recently because of the recession. However, free events are not an adequate substitute for regular dental care because they don't occur frequently enough and are often held on a first come, first serve basis.
