A group of students at Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) in Michigan recently surveyed several members of a nearby community who said dental care was their priority.
Brittany Samp, Kelsey Mapes, Erin Kelly and Andrea Bednarski are nursing students at SVSU, according to the Valley Vanguard, the school's official newspaper. They asked 80 people from East Saginaw which service they felt they needed most: transportation, vision care, dental care, obesity education or chronic disease education. About 75 percent of the participants said dental care was their main concern.
The students conducted the survey as part of an assignment issued by the nursing department of their school, reports the news source. Because the majority of the responses they received were for dental care, the four students went to Health Delivery, a medical clinic, to organize a day of inexpensive dentist visits that will take place on November 16.
The New York Times recently reported that more than 100 million Americans are without dental coverage. The dentist appointments organized by the students will be performed for $30, although the young women are fund raising in order to make the dental checkups free.
