The California Dental Association (CDA) is pulling out all the stops to help kids get the dental care they need.
The CDA gives dentists who participate in the Crowns for Kids program a recycling jar so that they may collect scrap crowns, which can contain precious metal. The money that is generated through collecting crowns allows the CDA to offer grants to local dental hygiene programs.
For the sake of the Crowns for Kids program, the CDA has partnered up with a company called Star Refining London, a collector and processor of dental scrap in the UK. These two organizations estimate millions of dollars worth of services could be provided to needy children if more dentists participated in the program. "Supporting the California Dental Association Foundation through this program is as exciting as it gets," said Tony Stern, the president of the English company.
The American Dental Association says crowns can be made from a number of different materials, including gold alloys, base metal allows and porcelain. Crowns are sometimes used to reinforce teeth that have been badly damaged by cavities.
