The state of Massachusetts could be facing some budget cuts that might affect MassHealth's dental care program for adults.
Governor Deval Patrick is dealing with a $600 million budget deficit, according to the Public News Service. The budget cuts the state is up against could mean MassHealth's Adult Dental program is finished.
"I think there's a general misconception that dental care is not one of the essential types of healthcare that people need, but dental care is critical to good health," said Dr Stephen Boswell to the news source. Boswell is the president of a community health center in Boston and he says certain dental diseases are associated with diabetes.
The American Dental Association says that patients with inadequate blood sugar control develop periodontal disease more easily than others because individuals with diabetes have a longer healing process and are thus more susceptible to health problems.
Governor Patrick's office is expected to discuss the details of the state's budget cuts by the end of the month of October, reports the service.
