Important information regarding infant dental care
Updated: 10/21/2009 3:00:32 PM

Important information regarding infant dental care The American Dental Association (ADA) insists that it is important to begin protecting children from tooth decay the moment their first tooth emerges and now the ADA is offering parents more dental care information.

The Journal of the ADA recently reported that all infant formulas contain enough fluoride to discolor children's teeth. Apparently, it is fluoride they don't need.

"Babies don't need fluoride, and fluoride ingestion doesn't reduce tooth decay," said Paul Beeber, the president of the New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation. "So why are U.S. babies still exposed to unnecessary fluoride chemicals via the water and food supplies, and why aren't parents informed of the consequences?"

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) say parents should avoid mixing fluoridated water into the formula they give their children. The CDC also say 48 percent of school children have fluorosed teeth.

Beeber encourages parents to protect their children against damaging levels of fluoride by demanding that legislators ensure products are labeled appropriately. The American Academy of Family Physicians maintains that fluoride helps children's teeth stay strong, but does say too much can leave stains.
