The recession has taken its toll on family budgets and dental care has become a service that some can't afford, so a school in Tennessee recently decided to take matters into its own hands.
Franklin County High School in Winchester became a clinic for the weekend of October 17 and more than 1,000 people took advantage of its services over the 48 hours, according to a Nashville TV channel.
"I have a filling that's gone past its prime," said Wendy Smith to the news source. Smith is from Coffee County and she has no dental coverage. "I haven't been able to have anything done with it in a long time."
Dr Thomas Hadley treated Smith on the 17. He told the TV station that he didn't have any appointments that day and he wanted to help the community.
According to a New York Times article published in September of 2009, more than 100 million Americans are without dental coverage. The Mayo Clinic says that if cavities aren't treated they could lead to tooth loss.
