This month, a sponsorship organization is providing free dental care to citizens of Pennsylvania and Maryland who cannot afford dental insurance.
Mission of Mercy (MOM) and a partner will perform more than 400 free fillings and tooth extractions on uninsured individuals in October.
"A healthy mouth may help other areas of the body stay healthy," said a dentist named Richard Klich. "Research has shown that poor oral health, in particular the presence of gum disease, may be associated with a number of health problems. Those problems include heart disease and stroke, low birth weight and premature births and diabetes."
Many families have chosen to abandon their dental insurance because the costs are too high and the recession has diminished their household income. Some of these families have found care thanks to the free services provided by organizations like MOM. Others looking for permanent care are exploring low cost dental insurance policies.
A common form of gum disease is gingivitis, according to the Mayo Clinic. Its symptoms are swollen and bleeding gums. Gingivitis can be prevented by brushing every day and flossing regularly.
