Routine dental care may not only enhance one's overall health, it may actually save a person's life.
Janet Kiser was on a dental checkup when her dentist noticed a tumor growing inside the roof of her mouth, Star Local News reports. Her dentist, Dr Frank Rabinowitz, told her he thought she may have oral cancer.
"The description of people who would typically have that kind of tumor was someone who chewed tobacco, or smoked a pipe, or at least smoked something," Kiser told the news provider.
Through a special device called a VELscop, Rabinowitz was able to take a more detailed picture of the growth in Kiser's mouth and send it to an oral surgeon, who would eventually operate on the growth.
While this story isn't about a typical dental checkup visit, it does suggest the importance of routine visits to one's dentists to get a teeth cleaning.
Those who don't get checked out, either because of a lack of dental insurance or no access to a dentist, may run the risk of developing tooth decay, which can lead to other health complications.
