Uninsured wait in line for dental care

Uninsured wait in line for dental care A nonprofit in Iowa recently organized an event to provide free dental care to some residents who may not have had access to dental insurance.

The Iowa Dental Foundation told the Des Moines Register that one in three Americans did not have dental insurance.

The event, dubbed Iowa Mission of Mercy, started last year and gave away approximately $600,000 worth of dental care. This year, on the first day, the event reportedly gave away $450,000, according to the paper.

One of those people was Nathan Pickrell who told the news provider he had waited in line for more than an hour with his wife and 5-year-old daughter. Though he has a job with a heating and cooling company, he said his $42,000 salary couldn't afford the $700 a month expense for dental insurance.

"We put off dental care for her," Pickrell said about his wife. "And teeth are one thing you don't want to put off."

While annual events are beneficial to those with no dental insurance, administering regular teeth cleanings are important for one's dental health.

The American Dental Association recommends brushing twice a day, flossing daily, eating a balanced diet and visiting your dentist regularly to maintain optimal dental health.
