As the lawmakers in Washington DC continue to debate about the finer points in the proposed healthcare reform plan, one dentist in Montana is urging more dental insurance coverage for all Americans.
Dr Bonnie Lederman, the supervising dentist of the dental hygiene program at MSU-Great Falls College of Technology, told ABC affiliate KFBB that dental care is important in rural areas. According to the dentist, the program she supervises is the only one of its kind in the state.
"I hope that dental care will not be brushed aside in this and that we can remind others of the correlation between dental and overall health," Lederman said. "That will be good for everybody."
Recently Senator Max Baucus unveiled his proposal for healthcare reform in the U.S., which reportedly talks specifically about bringing dental care coverage to those who need it.
However, until the bill is passed, practicing good dental care may be the best strategy for those who do not have access to a dentist or dental insurance.
October is Dental Hygiene Month, which may be a good opportunity for some people to start administering routine teeth cleanings if they haven't already.
