A national newspaper recently found that some people are going to their nearby emergency rooms for dental care, particularly when the pain is too much to handle.
Sidney Lawhorn told USA Today a horrible toothache had him hop into his car and take the hour-long trip to get to the University of Virginia Medical Center.
"I had a tooth pulled about 10 days ago and yesterday it got to hurting real bad," Lawhorn said. "My dentist is on vacation. They told me if it got too bad to come up to the emergency room."
Lawhorn added that he was forced to take the ride because no one was covering for his dentist. According to the 26-year-old's wife, their dentist is "the only cheap one we've got."
At this particular medical center, dental visits are the fifth most-common reason for people to walk into the ER, according to the news provider.
The story comes as President Obama is still urging for a health care reform plan, which some dental officials say needs to include a form of dental insurance.
Earlier this year, a Harris Interactive/HealthDay poll found that 51 percent of its respondents said they had no form of dental insurance or access to care.
