Some people have difficulty leaving the home due to disability or other physical limitations, comma and they can let their dental care slide.
While locally it is possible to find accessible dentists, one group in San Francisco has decided that making house calls for dental checkups can help those who cannot easily go outside.
Among those who benefit from their services are the elderly, mentally disabled or children with autism, and the dental team are able to take x-rays, examine teeth and gums and even remove teeth if necessary.
However, more complicated surgical procedures cannot be completed in the home.
"[W]hen we do a house call, we're going to gather all the information we need to make a diagnosis and bring in members of our specialist team," explains Dr David Blende. If necessary, they will find a way to get the patient to the hospital or dentists' office.
The American Dental Association recommends that adults have regular dental checkups to make sure teeth are healthy but also to check for conditions such as oral cancer or periodontal disease where bacteria enter the gums under damaged teeth.
