Dental care should include gum disease treatment
Updated: 8/14/2009 5:00:03 PM

Dental care should include gum disease treatment When people aim for healthy teeth, sometimes they forget that gum wellness is equally as important and one Los Angeles-based dentist hopes to help treat patients before they develop periodontal problems.

Gums are infected when bacteria seep into holes around the base of the tooth and patients are at a higher risk for losing their teeth or even developing cardiovascular problems, according to the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP).

Since almost 30 percent of the population may be genetically predisposed to gum disease, dental checkups and regular brushing are very important.

At City Dental in Los Angeles, Arestin is one modern technique used to treat this condition, and Dr Katherine Galina explains that it "can restore teeth and gums to their original healthy state with relatively no pain and can also cure the embarrassing issue of bad breath that tends to accompany gum disease."

The best thing people can do to avoid developing gingivitis or worse is to talk with their dentist and certainly to make an appointment if they experience persistent gum bleeding, bad breath or notice that their bite has changed, the AAP says.
