Long believed to only be for teens, more adults are starting to get braces to correct problems from childhood. Since dental care has advanced to the level at which we see it today, there are many different options less obvious and therefore more appealing to adults.
The San Bernardino Sun cites statistics published by the American Association of Orthodontists that state there was a 37 percent increase in adults who were willing to get braces from 1994 to 2004.
According to the American Dental Association (ADA), braces can improve oral health if the wearer's teeth are crooked or protruding to the extent that it affects the way he or she eats, breathes and holds the mouth.
In addition, many people feel better with a more attractive smile, dentist Ricardo Suarez tells the news provider. "More people are interested in cosmetic procedures," he said, "it just takes that spark to go do it."
The ADA further advises that adults wearing braces practice good oral hygiene and floss or brush teeth regularly in order to ensure that plaque does not build up on the teeth.
