Spry, a xylitol-sweetened chewing gum, has been announced in new 30-count packs by Xlear, a leading manufacturer of xylitol products. Taking advantage of research that has shown xylitol, a natural sweetener found in some products, can actually reduce the bacteria in the mouth that cause tooth decay, Spry is being marketed as a gum which promotes dental health.
"Simply stated, oral care products, such as our Spry gum, which contain high levels of xylitol, are good for your teeth," said Blaine Yates, president and chief executive officer of Xlear.
There has been research showing xylitol may have some dental health benefits, originally in Finland. The use of xylitol in food products such as chewing gum has been popular in that country for many years. Most recently, the use of a xylitol syrup rinse was found to be effective protection against tooth decay.
While some speculate xylitol may take a larger role in dental care in the future, dentists do not recommend it replace appropriate brushing with a toothbrush, daily flossing and regularly scheduled dental checkups with a trained dentist.
