Aloe vera may help dental health
Updated: 7/21/2009 7:00:26 PM

Aloe vera may help dental health Long used as a natural remedy for a host of ailments, especially burns and cuts, the aloe vera plant is finding a place in dental care. Although aloe vera has been added to dental health products such as toothpaste for some time, some dentists have been dubious of its potential benefits.

A recent study published in the journal General Dentistry seems to put those worries to rest, showing that aloe vera tooth gel is as effective as toothpaste in preventing cavities. The study found that aloe vera tooth gel is at least as effective at controlling the bacteria that cause cavities as commercially available toothpaste.

In addition, aloe vera is an anti-inflammatory due to the presence of anthraquinones, which can help with the swelling and redness of gingivitis and other mild forms of gum disease. Increasing evidence has linked gum disease and inflammation to various systemic health problems such as cardiovascular disease and stroke.

The researchers cautioned that not all aloe products are equal, and a product must contain the stabilized gel from the center of the plant while following certain manufacturing standards to be effective.
