Dental Insurance Cut in States with Strapped Budgets

Dental Insurance Cut in States with Strapped Budgets The Guilford County Board of Education, facing the need to cut their budget by over $30 million due to cuts by the North Carolina legislature, intends to stop paying for dental insurance for school employees.

The cuts at the school board are only the latest example of belt-tightening across the country, as states desperately try to make up huge budget deficits resulting from the recession.

California's budget woes have received the most national attention. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger slashed many programs, and is even issuing IOUs to some groups owed money by the state, in response to the crisis.

Cuts to the state's Medi-Cal program for low-income residents have resulted in 3.2 million adults in California losing their dental benefits, according to the state Oral Health Access Council. A lawsuit to restore those benefits is set to be heard August 19.

Individuals and families searching for ways to save money on dental care may want to consider discount dental plans. These plans, an alternative to dental insurance, offer discounts of 10 to 60 percent on most dental procedures.
