Cuts to Massachusetts' Commonwealth Care coverage, which subsidizes health care premiums for needy residents, could result in the elimination of dental care coverage for roughly 700,000 poor enrollees who cannot otherwise afford dental insurance, according to the Boston Globe.
Facing a severe shortage in the state budget, the board of the Connector Authority cut $115 million, or 12 percent, from the state's healthcare program, but there has been fierce debate over exactly which programs, serving which populations, should be cut.
Governor Deval Patrick cut the dental care subsidy for the poorest residents as a means to save money, but the state legislature restored the coverage in their version of the bill. Reports now say that Deval's revised budget keeps dental care coverage in the budget.
"Were hopeful that these 700,000 adults dont have to worry again this year that their dental benefits are in jeopardy," Brian Rosman, research director for Health Care for All, told the Globe. He added that the plan to retain dental coverage indicates that the governor understands the importance of such care to overall health.
