The creators of the Got Milk? campaign have teamed up with the Dental Health Foundation to support National Dairy Month and National Smile Month - both in June - by way of a photo contest to increase awareness of students across California whose dental health is at risk.
"Today, there are nearly 140,000 elementary school children across the state in pain requiring treatment for dental care," says Dr Steven Uranga McKane, chair of the Dental Health Foundation. "Parents need to be proactive and encourage development of good oral health habits and - as studies show - proper nutrition in order to ensure a beautiful smile."
In addition to educating families on the importance of good dental health habits for children and the importance of calcium in helping prevent tooth decay, the photo contest also offers children ages 6-12 a $500 shopping spree at a toy store and an electric toothbrush if they win.
California, facing a huge financial crisis, is slashing dental insurance for those on its Medi-Cal program starting July 1st, which will place thousands more children at risk for having insufficient dental care.
