The controversial Louisiana state bill that would ban or limit the use of mobile dentistry clinics to provide dental care to schoolchildren lacking dental insurance or otherwise unable to see a dentist was set aside to address amendments to the original bill, according to the Advocate Capitol News Bureau.
"We're at a point that I recognize the will of the floor to do this piecemeal statutorily which is really not in the best interest of the program on either side," said House Speaker Jim Tucker, a Republican from Terrytown.
HB687, in its current form, would have allowed certain mobile dentistry programs to operate and established that others could be approved by the State Board of Dentistry, changes added by opponents of the original bill, which banned mobile dentistry programs completely. The amendments provide exceptions to the prohibition for non-profits or where the ban would impede students from getting dental care.
Sponsors of the bill says the mobile clinics are a questionable practice.
After setting the bill aside, Tucker said he, the bill's sponsor and others would work on an amendment that would result in procedures to protect children but still allow the programs.
