Iowa Governor Chet Culver signed a bill into law yesterday that will provide dental care to 11,000 children currently without dental insurance over the next fiscal year.
"One of my top priorities as governor is to see that every Iowa child has access to the healthcare they not only need, but deserve," said Governor Culver.
Part of a general effort to expand healthcare coverage in the state, Senate File 389 allocates funds to the states Medicaid and HAWK-I programs, including more than $510,000 to provide dental coverage to children currently without it.
That funding increases to $1.45 million in fiscal year 2011, which is expected to provide for the dental health of almost 25,000 children.
The state intends to provide coverage for 90 percent of children under 300 percent of the federal poverty level by fiscal year 2011.
Parents of uninsured children who qualify for government health-insurance programs would be required to sign them up in order to receive the benefits. The current bill only provides for children without dental insurance, although it does create a commission to make recommendations how to improve healthcare for all Iowans.
