Patients without dental insurance forced to turn to dental schools

Patients without dental insurance forced to turn to dental schools Unable to afford dental care, some Missouri residents turn to dental schools to try and find a cheaper treatment option for their dental health.

People travel great distances to the University of Missouri at Kansas City Dental School, where students still in training to become dentists or hygienists treat them, according to a report on KMBC.

Dr Harvey Eplee, dean of the UMKC clinic said patients come from Jackson County, Johnson County and Sedalia, among others. "We have patients from Topeka, Kansas," he said. "We'll treat 60,000 to 70,000 patients over a course of an entire year."

Carolyn Eastridge drives all the way from Wellington, Missouri, to get treated at the clinic for one simple reason, he doesn't have dental insurance.

"I have health insurance, but not dental," Eastridge told the news source

KMBC reports that many of those treated are children, who would otherwise not be able to afford dental care.

Families who are searching for ways to save money on dental care may want to consider discount dental plans. These plans, an alternative to dental insurance, offer discounts of 10 to 60 percent on most dental procedures.
