Even when families have dental insurance, the costs for out-of-pocket expenses are high, and for many ranchers and farmers they are higher than their out-of-pocket expenditures on drugs.
"We dont make the regular six month visits and we don't go in every time we have a toothache," said Craig Pausch, in an article appearing in the Whapeton Daily News. "However, if we have to go in, we go in."
Pausch, who runs a diversified cow/calf and grain operation with his wife, was one of the respondents in a survey about dental care by Access Project that showed how hard costs have hit families in the Great Plains region.
Because he is self-employed, Pausch has to take care of his own health insurance. According to the article, he pays $11,000 a year for insurance, but this does not include dental insurance. He has none.
According to the survey Pausch was part of, he is not alone. The report found less than half of the families in their survey had dental insurance. If the family purchased health insurance on the individual market, the number dropped to 12 percent.
