Inadequate dental insurance limits access to care

Inadequate dental insurance limits access to care As many as 300,000 kids in Wisconsin didn't get a checkup in 2007 because of inadequate dental insurance, according to an article in the Milwaulkee Journal Sentinel.

Although these children had dental insurance through the state's BadgerCare Plus program, the reimbursements paid to dentists are so low that most dentists in the state will not accept them as patients, according to the article.

"I stopped trying," said Lucia Alba of the fact her son had never seen a dentist. "Because every time I called up the dentist, I would get the same answer. All the time. They weren't accepting my insurance. They had a long waiting list."

The article did not have the numbers on how many children in Wisconsin have no dental insurance, or in what proportions they do not receive dental care.

Lori Barbeau, the director of The Dental Center at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in Wauwatosa, says the center gets up to 40 calls a day from parents seeking dental care for their children.

"You can't do enough," Barbeau said.

An editorial by the paper calls the situation "simply not fair."
