Despite the fact dentists are beginning to see reductions in revenue from the economic downturn, people appear to not be cutting back on the basics of dental care, such as checkups, x-rays and cleanings, according to a dentist interviewed in the San Antonio Express News.
Dr Lisa B. Masters of the Masters Dental Group, did tell the news source that elective cosmetic dentistry is being delayed, however.
"You've got to take care of your teeth or you're going to have other health problems," said 78-year-old Dean Countryman, a patient of Dr Masters. "When people separate their teeth from their other health care, theyre making a big mistake."
Dr Hilton Israelson, president of the Texas Dental Association interviewed by the Express News, says that layoffs and the fall of the stockmarket have had an effect on the dental profession as it has changed people's dental health choices.
"Most people are seeking emergency type treatment instead of elective treatment," Israelson said in the article, "There's nervousness in the economy, where people are afraid to spend their money."
The number of patients seeking treatment has declined starting in the last three months of 2008, according to Israelson.
