School program promotes dental care for young children

School program promotes dental care for young children The Rialto Unified School District dental program helps those who are not getting adequate health care.

Frances Pollock, the coordinator of Rialto's program, said many district parents don't have dental insurance, or they have policies that do not cover the extensive work their children might need, in an article appearing in the Press-Enterprise, of inland Southern California.

The program is funded by First 5 San Bernardino, a program for the purpose of promoting, supporting and improving the early development of children from the prenatal stage to five years of age.
The program provides preschoolers and kindergarteners with dental check-ups twice a year.

"If we didn't have this program, school nurses would find kids if they come in to complain about pain or if parents ask for help," Pollock said to the news provider. "(Parents) wouldn't have as much guidance to get follow through, and we definitely wouldn't find as many kids."

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentists recommends that all children see a dentist for a dental health risk assessment by six months of age.
