In a trend that may be happening in other parts of the country as well, some California residents are putting off dental care because they are either unemployed or can't afford a dental checkup, the Ventura County Star reports.
Patrick Thompson told the news provider since losing his job in December, he's been putting off a dental care procedure because he can't afford the $1,400 bill.
"I had to have an emergency root canal," Thompson said. "The bill comes in and you just cringe."
The 37-year-old may not be alone. Early results from a California Dental Association statewide poll suggest the weak economy and layoffs are keeping some people from getting dental care, according to the article. Those who do have dental insurance are rushing to their dentist in fear of losing their coverage from being laid off.
Dental officials have said this strategy to save money by forgoing dental care is harmful to one's health and is not advised.
People who are searching for ways to save money on dental care may want to consider discount dental plans. These plans, an alternative to dental insurance, offer discounts of 10 to 60 percent on most dental procedures.
