Last month the American Dental Association held its first summit concerning dental care, which discussed some problems citizens have with access. The discussion eventually inspired a resolution in the House of Representatives.
The Access to Dental Care Summit, held at the end of March in Chicago, welcomed 144 participants to "share ideas, brainstorm and work collaboratively to improve access to dental care," according to the ADA.
"The ADA is committed to finding common ground and shared solutions to address the oral health needs of the most vulnerable among us," said John S. Findley, ADA president, during his opening remarks at the event.
From the summit, the ADA Council on Access, Prevention and Interprofessional Relations (CAPIR) recommended that another summit be held, this time on a national basis, to focus on providing dental care for underserved children who may not have access to dental insurance.
The recommendation from CAPIR is meant to address the death of 12-year-old Deamonte Driver, who succumbed from a brain abscess attributed to an untreated dental disease, said the association.
Since then, the recommendation has become ADA House of Delegates Resolution 17H-2007.
