Costly dental insurance preventing surgery

For some families, dental insurance may not be enough It's been a year since Alex Berry has been able to flash a proper smile.

Last April, the 16-year-old from Akron, Ohio got a baseball thrown at his mouth during a game, causing five of his teeth to fall out, including the bottom four in his jaw, the Ohio NBC affiliate WKYC reports.

"It's hard," Berry told the news provider. "Sometimes (classmates say) 'Oh he ain't got no teeth.' Sometimes I can't eat. I just want my teeth."

Though the family had dental insurance, it was used up after the first $1,000, according to the article. To fix Berry's jaw and facial injuries, the family reportedly needs upwards of $10,000. An additional $15,000 may be needed for braces and dental implants to replace the teeth.

Berry's family received an insurance handout from the school, though it was not enough to cover the majority of the dental care costs associated with operations.

Families who are searching for ways to save money on dental care may want to consider discount dental plans. These plans, an alternative to dental insurance, offer discounts of 10 to 60 percent on most dental procedures.
