An Arizona dentist is reminding the public that cutting back on dental care in an effort to save money may not be the best idea, especially if people are looking for a new job.
Christine Chapman, a lead dental assistant in Payson, Arizona, said a smile is usually the first impression a person makes with others and if people start ignoring their dental health, they may pay for it later on, the Payson Roundup reports.
"Oral prevention is like changing the oil in a car, instead of waiting and having to change the transmission, you get regular oil changes to keep the car running," Chapman said. "If you don't get cleanings, you may end up paying more for services, like a root canal."
Recently a Gallup-Healthways poll reported more than one-third of the population did not visit a dentist last year, possibly due to a lack of dental insurance, the Chicago Tribune reports. Some dental health officials have called the situation a "silent epidemic."
The American Dental Association recommends people administer routine teeth cleanings and to schedule regular dental checkups with their dentist to avoid developing serious health conditions in their mouth.
