The North Carolina Dental Society is urging residents in its state to continue with routine dental care and treatment, despite the weakening economy.
NCDS cited dangers to overall health without routine dental care and said that maintaining optimal dental health can help a person avoid serious health conditions in the future.
The warning also follows a Gallup-Healthways pool which ranked North Carolina 34th in the country in terms of the number of individuals who have visited a dentist in the past 12 months.
"The fact that more than a third of those in our state aren't seeing a dentist regularly is an alarming statistic," said Dr. Alec Parker, executive director of the NCDS. "Now that we know that oral infections can lead to devastating overall health problems, including life-threatening cardio-vascular disease, it becomes even more important to have routine oral examinations by a dentist."
Parker added the NCDS will be sponsoring an adult program that will aim to provide dental care to those in the state who may not have access to dental insurance or to a dentist's office.
Recently, a separate survey found more people were opting to forgo dental care services in an effort to save money.
