During the American Dental Association's seventh annual Give Kids a Smile program, a total of 465,800 children were given free dental health across the country.
The event, which originally started in St. Louis, holds free clinics in various cities aimed at providing dental care to children who may not have access to dental insurance. This year children received X-rays, fillings, cleanings, sealants, educational materials and dental hygiene products, which were all free of charge.
Along with the 45,700 dental care professionals who volunteered their time, three national sponsors supported the effort.
Henry Schein Dental provided 3,000 professional dental product kids containing items such as floss, fluoride and patient bibs, which served a total of 50 children. Colgate-Palolive Company supplied the event with 300,000 toothbrushes with tubes of toothpaste. Finally Dexis Digital X-ray gave one of its systems to each of the 56 U.S. dental schools participating in the program.
The program also had some celebrity power this year with St. Louis Cardinal first baseman Albert Pujols donating his time to record nationwide public service announcements about administering dental care to children.
