Apparently, there is a lot more people can do at home to administer dental care besides administering a daily teeth cleaning and flossing.
The Chicago Dental Society has released a list of different ways people can ensure optimal dental health, which may be beneficial for those who may not have access to dental insurance.
People should drink plenty of water (tap, not bottled) and rinse their mouth after meals, but especially after drinking teeth-staining beverages like soda, wine and coffee, according to the organization. Another way to avoid staining one's teeth is to use a straw.
The society suggests chewing sugar-free gum to increase saliva production and to bring one's teeth much-needed minerals such as calcium, phosphate and fluoride.
Finally, it's best to avoid foods with a high content of sugar and carbohydrates to avoid the bacteria feeding in the mouth, which can cause tooth decay. However, eating a piece of cheese can help neutralize acids.
People who do not adhere to a dental care routine increase their risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease, which can lead to serious conditions like heart disease.
