A new survey revealed nearly half of Chicago residents were living without dental insurance, suggesting there may be a fair amount of people with poor dental health.
The Chicago Dental Society polled more than 300 residents in an effort to discover what effect, if any, the economy was having on people's dental care choices.
According to the report, 22 percent of respondents said someone in their family had pains or other oral-related problems, but was putting off getting care because they could not afford it at the time.
In terms of their dental health, 20 percent reported having several dental issues that needed treatment and five percent said they were currently in pain from their teeth and gums.
Finally, with the question of diet and dental health, the survey found 17 percent said they did not associate soda with causing harm to their teeth. About 22 percent said they didn't consider there was any relationship between one's diet and dental health.
People who do not administer dental care with a daily teeth cleaning and flossing may have an increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
