In recognition of Children's Dental Health Month, the American Dental Association (ADA) is partnering with two organizations to offer free dental assessments to students throughout New York state.
The ADA has partnered with the New York State Dental Foundation and Kinney Drugs, which will help state children comply with a recently-passed law encouraging children to obtain dental health certificates before attending kindergarten, second, fourth, seventh and 10th grades.
It is the hope the program with the ADA and the Dental Foundation will assist children in the state who may not have access to dental insurance.
"There are a lot of children who don't have a dentist or who have not seen a dentist. There are a lot of children who fall between the cracks," Amy Posey, executive director of the foundation's fifth district, told AuburnPub.com.
The certificates are meant to offer written proof to school officials that a student does not have any painful dental health conditions, obvious swelling due to cavities or any other condition that could interfere with the child's ability to chew, speak or focus.
"Good dental health affects everything as far as overall health is concerned," Posey told the news provider.
