The American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA) plans to emphasize the importance of good dental care in children in February during National Children's Dental Health Month, which is dedicated to raising awareness of improving dental health.
During the dental health awareness month, participating clinics will provide workshops and various free dental care to children who may not have dental insurance.
Building on its theme of A Healthy Smile Lasts a Lifetime, the association said it hopes to instill lessons of early dental care to families and children.
"It is important that we promote healthy oral hygiene habits while children are young so that they can continue these routines as they grow older," Diann Bomkamp, ADHA president said.
Good dental hygiene can prevent tooth decay, which is the most common chronic disease in children, according to the American Dental Association. If the condition is not treated, tooth decay can lead to other serious conditions that are detrimental to a person's overall health.
The ADHA suggests parents administer early dental care on their infants to prevent gum disease, as well as helping children avoid eating too many food products with high sugar content.
