Eligible children all around the country will have the opportunity to receive free dental care in a program that has ballooned since its humble beginnings in 2002.
Give Children a Smile is a national program from the American Dental Association aimed at improving the dental health of children who may not have access to dental insurance.
The idea was hatched by the Greater St Louis Dental Society and a group of area dentists in the city who set up a temporary full-service clinic. In two days, the dentists treated approximately 400 children.
A year later, the ADA launched the idea as a nationwide program with each state managing its own initiative. The events are usually held in February.
Charleston dentist Dr Diane Paleta will be participating in the West Virginia program on February 27th and said she hopes families are pro-active in bringing their children, the Charleston Daily Mail reports.
"Our target is for kids in limbo who fall between the cracks and don't qualify for free dental care. Their parents earn a little too much for state assistance. We won't refuse any children. Especially this year with the economic crisis all over the country, we want to help," Paeta told the news provider.
