An annual free neighborhood dental health checkup experienced its highest number of participants, suggesting there may be an increase of people living without dental insurance.
More than 100 people from the Hispanic Lower West Side in Buffalo, New York attended the two-day screening at the Judge J Mattina Community Health Center, which is reportedly the highest attendance the event has seen in its five-year existence, states the University of Buffalo student paper UB Reporter.
The screenings checked people for cavities, gum disease and signs of oral cancer, according to the article. Five patients were found to have suspicious lesions in their mouth.
"We were bombarded. People wanted to be screened. They brought their relatives. They didn't come for the free toothbrush and toothpaste," Yoly Gonzalez, the event's founder, told the news provider.
With more people getting screened this year, it's possible more will incorporate better dental care into their daily schedule, which can prevent the development of tooth decay, as well as other serious conditions.
Oral cancer can form in any part of the mouth or throat. Men over the age of 40 who use tobacco or alcohol are at a higher risk of developing the disease.
