After an equipment problem last year that halted the water fluoridation in Shelbyville, Tennessee, the process is back in effect and providing dental health to approximately 16,000 residents.
For "several months," the water leaving the Shelbyville treatment plant didn't contain fluoride, which meant the city's children were at an increased risk for more cavities and tooth decay, the Times-Gazette reports.
"The fluoride was coming from China. We were not able to feed the right dosage, so we suspended the program rather than causing a health hazard," David Crowell, the general manager for Shelbyville Power and Water, told the news provider.
However, Shelbyvillians can now rest easy knowing the dental care they had grown accustomed to will be back and be seemingly safer than before.
The fluoride will no longer be coming from China since the city's water department found a domestic supplier, according to the article. Also, a grant will pay for the new equipment and installation.
Water fluoridation has been endorsed by the American Dental Association for the past 50 years as an effective way to achieve dental care and to prevent tooth decay.
