A national organization has awarded a significant amount of money to 16 non-profit dental health initiatives aimed at providing dental care and education to economically disadvantaged families.
The National Children's Oral Health Foundation (NCOHF) has given a total of $170,500 to facilities and community centers that provide dental care for those who may not have access to it or who lack dental insurance.
Fern Ingber, NCOHF's president and CEO, said the grants will help "break the cycle of suffering" for children and adults living with dental diseases such as tooth decay. Left untreated, the condition can lead to poor general health for patients.
According to the foundation, approximately one third of U.S. children suffer from serious dental health problems that can affect sleep and learning patterns.
"At this time, when the numbers of economically disadvantaged children are increasing, new and innovative ways to deliver vital prevention-oriented oral health services must be developed," said Ingber.
Families currently living with no dental insurance may benefit the most from the awarded grant money, which will increase their dental health. Dental care is especially important for children, who can prevent serious future conditions by maintaining their dental health through routine teeth cleanings.
