St. Louis Cardinals first basemen Albert Pujols will be starring in public service announcements slated to run in February in honor of National Children's Dental Health Month.
The PSAs are for Give Kids A Smile, an initiative aimed at providing education and dental care to low-income children who may not have access to such services because of a lack of dental insurance or other factors.
Pujols will donate his time to record the PSAs for the American Dental Association (ADA), which will be distributed to approximately 1,300 broadcast stations and cable outlets around the country.
This is not the first time Pujols, the 2008 National League Most Valuable Player, has focused his attention on bringing dental care to children in need.
In 2007, Pujols and his wife Deidre travelled with five St Louis dentists to the Dominican Republic to bring dental care to 815 children in La Romana Orphanage, according to the ADA. The Pujolses paid for the entire trip and helped set up two portable dental units and supplies at each clinic site.
Administering dental care to children early can assist in avoiding conditions such as tooth decay, the single most common chronic childhood disease, states the ADA.
