As the options for improving the appearance of someone's smile increase, more adults are choosing orthodontics such as braces.
That is according to the American Association of Orthodontists, which says that around 1 million North American adults are currently embracing orthodontic treatment.
"Teeth can be moved at any age. Adults understand the investment in a beautiful and healthy smile," said AAO spokesperson Dr Numa W. Cobb Jr.
He added that adults may be more likely to practice good dental care, such as cleaning their braces and wearing elastics and retainers, because they are paying for the treatment themselves.
Some of the most recent improvements on conventional braces include clear braces, tooth-colored brackets and technologically advanced tooth-moving wires.
One innovation, Invisalign, has been chosen by more than 500,000 people since coming on the market, according to the company that makes them.
Invisalign uses clear, custom-fitted, removable aligners that slowly reposition teeth. The aligners are changed every two weeks and patients may see results within a year.
