The New Year offers plenty of opportunities to make plans to improve your health - and focusing on dental care can make a big difference to your mouth.
One resolution that could enhance your dental health is to make sure you visit a dentist at least twice in 2009, including a professional teeth cleaning.
"A prophylaxis, also known as a prophy or professional dental cleaning, reinforces the at-home oral health regimen," explains Academy of General Dentistry spokesperson Dr Anne Murray.
"It is designed to preserve health, prevent the spread of disease and give the dentist an opportunity to locate other areas in the mouth that may need attention."
Preventive services offered at a typical teeth cleaning may include plaque and tartar removal, stain removal, the application of fluoride, sealants and the polishing of fillings and crowns.
Meanwhile, diagnostic checks - such as x-rays, an oral cancer examination and an evaluation of gum tissue may also be carried out.
Dental hygienists may also advise patients on issues such as dental care, nutritional counseling, dental hygiene, cosmetic dentistry and how to quit smoking.
