Louisiana elementary children received dental care thanks to an initiative that brings the much-needed service to the people who need it most.
Reach Out Healthcare America recently delivered dental health to 7-year-old students at Alma Redwine Elementary School, KATC.com reports.
The school's counselor Toni Catalani initially contacted the organization and inquired about bringing their services to the school, according to the article. Reach Out sent back permission slips to be signed by the parents of the children. Approximately 200 slips were returned to the school.
"It is about 60 percent of our student body taking part. It is wonderful for them to bring the dentist office to our students," Catalani told the news provider.
Some of the appointments were more than a regular checkup. Seven-year-old Yoko Atkins received dental care to fix a toothache he had and to get rid of the pain in his mouth, stated KATC.com.
The program appears to be a successful effort against child tooth decay, one of the more chronic diseases during childhood. Past studies have shown children from low-income households suffer a higher rate of tooth decay than any other children, emaxhealth.com reports.
