The holiday season and the occasional overindulgence go hand in hand, but for parents trying to encourage good dental health in their children the challenge can be twofold.
Parents up and down the land agree it's not always easy to allow your kids to enjoy the holiday season and all the sweet treats it brings while keeping their teeth in good shape.
However, advice is on hand from experts keen not only to promote dental health but encourage healthy eating in children of all ages.
One good way to encourage kids to fill up on veggies and other nutritious foods rather than gorging on pre-meal candies is to involve them in the cooking process.
Why not have them decide on some of the vegetables you will be serving for the festive meal. Even better and naturally depending on their age, get them shopping and chopping and peeling the veggies, the USDA Pyramid campaign advises.
And it's not just what a child eats or drinks, but when that's important. Take soda, for example.
"Sipping a soft drink all afternoon is more harmful to your teeth than drinking a large soda with a meal and then not drinking any soda for the rest of the day," the Academy of General Dentistry advises.
