As options for dental care grow more technologically sophisticated, more dentists are turning to lasers to perform common procedures.
For example, an article on thetowntalk.com describes how laser dentistry can be used to clean bacteria from the area around a tooth's roots during root canal therapy.
The traditional method for doing so requires hand and rotary instruments that remove the tooth's pulp and nerve. After this, the root canals are filled and sealed to prevent them from bacterial infection.
Florida dentist Dr Chris Edwards said that when he uses lasers for dental care procedures such as this one, many patients do not need anesthesia and the entire treatment is usually quicker.
According to the Academy of Laser Dentistry, many patients also appreciate that the tools do not make a whirring sound like a drill does.
"The laser is the future of medicine - not just dentistry. I could never imagine not using it," Edwards told the news provider.
However, he added that lasers are expensive and that not all dental insurance covers laser dentistry.
Some of the other limits of laser dental care include the fact that they cannot be used on teeth that contain dental fillings or to fill cavities between teeth.
