It is not uncommon for people to find that their teeth change color a bit over the years, due to a variety of factors.
The Academy of General Dentistry suggests that people who want to maintain a young appearance and a bright smile should investigate their teeth whitening options.
Some common causes of discoloration include staining from food and drink, illness, medications, heredity or environmental factors.
These days, adults who want to correct these types of imperfections may do so without complications, the AGD said.
"With today's techniques and materials, we can change the color of a patient's teeth to provide a more healthy, youthful appearance," AGD spokesperson Dr Howard S Glazer explained.
The American Dental Association recommends consulting with a dentist before beginning any teeth whitening treatment, for best results.
Some types of discoloration may not respond well to bleach, the ADA cautions. Yellowish hues often respond the most satisfactorily, while grey shades may not change much.
You can choose in-office or at-home treatments, while some toothpastes also offer teeth whitening properties.
