Getting a bridge or crown fitted has traditionally required having a physical mold taken first.
Now, a digital device which works by wirelessly transmitting scanned impressions of your teeth and bite direct to a specialist laboratory from the dentist's chair may provide a new advance in modern dental care.
Once transmitted to the processing center, the Cadent iTero digital file is converted into a physical mold and sent to the laboratory for rendering. Levels of accuracy and patient satisfaction are reportedly high.
Lisa Heads, a dental assistant at the Cupertino Dental Group, told the San Jose Mercury News that many patients welcomed the move away from traditional putty to digital.
"A lot of people can't handle the goo. They gag, they choke, they just don't like it," she was quoted as saying.
According to manufacturer Cadent, digital impressions not only eliminate the discomfort of traditional impressions but are considerably quicker to produce.
A hand-held wand is used to take the dental scans, and it is possible for the patient to halt the process at any point.
